November 13, 1997 Meeting
Evergreen Soaring, Inc.
The meeting was called to order by President Chris Chantrill at 7:30PM in the Museum of Flight Aeroclub room.
Chris introduced prospective member and CFIG Jeff Brazil (don’t think I got the last name correctly, sorry, Jeff). Jeff is also working on getting his A&P license. Sounds like our kinda guy. Welcome aboard, Jeff.
Since this was the Annual Meeting, we had a big turnout, no surprise given the electric excitement of ELECTIONS! Everybody wants a piece o’ the action!
President-elect and Soon To Be President John Daly, Chair of the Nominating Committee (some said “Hatchet Man”, but Daly denies this), was called upon to start the nominations for President-Elect. Scott Imlay had been nominated but declined the honor. Nominees from the floor were Mike Bailey, Doug Kyllo and Craig Kramer. After much politicking, favor currying, promises and muckraking, the vote was taken. Mike Bailey won by a hair over an exceptionally fine field of nominees. What did you have to promise, Mike? Ambassadorships to the next Nationals? Free flights?
Next on the slate was the office of Treasurer. A cabal of suspicious looking “members” emerged from a smoke-filled room. Looking and acting like they were up to no good, they proceeded to nominate Jerry Painter (Painter was later found bloody, bound and gagged in a ditch). In the absence of any other candidates, worthy or otherwise, and against everyone’s better judgment, Painter was declared the winner by default. Current Treasurer Mike Delaney was later seen getting pats on the back and was rumored to be handing out “pay-backs” promised for delivery from Treasurer purgatory. Daly sez Painter already has two strikes against him. Painter sez, “How can I get three?”
The esteemed office of Secretary was next. Another hotly contested race, nominees were Howard Glover, Mike Delaney and Doug Sebastian. Amid cries of “Foul!” from the other candidates, Doug Sebastian was duly elected. Demands for a re-count were re-buffed.
The final elected office to be contested was that of Operations Director. Current man in the saddle, Craig Kramer, was declared a good fellow and worthy of continuing an up-’til-now fine job and was re-elected by accolade. Accusations of “rigged elections” were hotly denied by Kramer.
The excitement of the elections over, the meeting faded into the more mundane Officers’ Reports on the State of the Club. John Daly cautioned members to use radios at all times when flying club ships. Not only is the Arlington Airport management concerned about the lack thereof to date, it is wise and safe practice. Also, the Airport has contacted us, the Boeing club and Alpha regarding towplane operations, again. Seems a towline just missed a vehicle traveling along 179th St. NE, just south of the airport, and snagged the fence at the south airport boundary at the north edge of the road. A no-no, as is snaring the localizer antenna array at the north end (repair costs: $40,000, to be billed to the guilty party and probable discontinuance of glider ops at KAWO). Take heed.
Daly also noted that our self-insurance fund has approximately $10K in the kitty at this time, with the goal being $40K. Three more years to go, God willing no more damage to club ships.
After much wrangling between potential candidates, Gary Thayer was signed on to continue as Glidepath editor, Howard Glover will take over as Scheduler and Brooks Johnson will expand his present duties as Towplane Manager to include Maintenance Director (for gliders). Still unfilled is the post of Chief CFIG. Volunteers?
Mike Delaney reported that the state of the Treasury is “good.” Total revenues and expenditures were about the same as ‘96. As usual, maintenance costs have been high and will continue to be so, especially given that the Pawnee is scheduled for a $4000 permanent fix to the wing cluster AD in December.
Our trusty Blanik L-13, N48029, is in need of new fabric covering on all its control surfaces. This chore is to be undertaken by club members for the paltry (relatively speaking, of course) sum of about $500 for materials, compared to a cost of about $4000-$5000 if hired out. Disassembly will take place at KAWO on Saturday, November 29, with re-covering to commence the following day at Keith Turner’s. Be There or be Square. Refreshments to follow. Stay tuned for further developments
Delaney recommended that all flight fees and dues remain as they are. This suggestion was apparently approved, your Secretary being unable to ascertain the exact vote in the face of all the cheering from the assembled membership. He also recommended that we take only Evergreen Soaring tow cards (No more BESA or SGC cards) to make sure we get the tow-only member thang straight.
Joe Robison reported that the club Webpage is coming along nicely and demo’d his preliminary creation. Christian Becker has been assisting him in the work. Suitable pictures (this is a family operation, you know) are welcomed for inclusion. Nice job, guys.
Doug Kyllo mentioned that he knows where we can get a nice little trailer to carry the FOO cart for about $95.
Mom sez “Remember to turn the Clubhouse thermostat down to 55 when you leave the field.” We pay commercial rates for electricty an’ it aint cheap.
The next Board meeting will be held at Chris Chantrill’s, Thursday November 20 at 7:30PM. The old Board will dump, er, I mean “hand-off” to the New Board at that time. See you all there.
Respectfully submitted,
Jerry Painter, Secretary-Was-Been
