Evergreen Soaring
General Meeting
October 9, 1997
The meeting was called to order at 7:30PM by President Chris Chantrill in the Aeroclub room of the Museum of Flight.
Treasurer Mike Delaney reported that we are “solvent.”
President Chantrill read a letter received from the Arlington Airport regarding repairing the “improvement” made to the grass “ramp” to the south end of glider takeoff strip 34. The repairs will begin October 13 and be completed by October 17. The repairs will consist of regrading, composting and planting of sod. The area will be marked off and closed during the above period.
Ray Stoer reviewed the latest happenings with the Pawnee. Although it had originally been planned to have the next annual completed at the same time the wing cluster AD repairs are made, the annual will have to be done earlier than planned, i.e., in October. Paul Nieyenhuis (AIR, Inc.) will do the annual. At the last annual a repetitive inspection (AD) of the wing lift (compression?) struts was not made as required. It has just been inspected and found airworthy. The wall thickness of the struts is less than .040 and can be reduced to .024 (!) by internal corrosion and still be considered airworthy. When was the towpilots’ parachute last packed, Mike?
Ray has been working on straightening out the Pawnee’s paperwork in preparation for taking it to Oregon for the wing cluster fitting AD work. All is not well. He has volunteered to set up a spreadsheet matrix of required inspections, dates due and completed, so that it can be easily determined whether the aircraft is legal to fly. Pawnees, as a type--not just N3390Y--have a rather checkered history of AD’s and SB’s. Determining what needs to be done when and if it was done is a complex task. Thanks, Ray, for taking on the chore of simplifying things.
As we know all too well, it can get windy around here in the fall, winter and spring (sometimes in the summer, too, don’t want to forget that). The Arlington Airport staff have secured trailers by tying them to one another and the ground to prevent repetitions of damage. Thanks, folks. Since we have significant variations in size and proportions of both trailers and gliders, Mike Bailey is going to approach the airport about having assigned tie down spots, with ground rings placed specifically for the occupant.
The next Board meeting will be postponed one week to take place October 23 at the Presidente’s Palace.
The upcoming Annual Awards Banquet will be at the Yankee Diner in Ballard. Chris Chantrill is doing the organizing.
Finally, the moment we have all been waiting for arrived. The floor was opened to allow eager candidates to have their names thrown into the ring for the upcoming elections. Also, John Daly has chaired a nominating committee to encourage the bashful to enter the fray. The results of the nominations was:
President-elect: Scott Imlay
Secretary: Jerry Painter
Treasurer: none
Operations Director: Craig Kramer
Further nominations will be called for during the annual meeting and election next month. Mark your calendars.
Christian Becker and Joe Robison are at work on an official home page for Evergreen Soaring. We can obtain a “domain name” (i.e. the right to call our page EvergreenSoaring.com or .edu or .org) by paying $50 to the keeper of the lists of such things. Should we do so? The question was moved, seconded and duly approved. Thanks Chris and Joe for your efforts.
Finally, it was agreed we should schedule a time and place for recovering the ailerons and flaps for Blanik 029. Keith Turner has a heated garage and spraygun and kindly volunteered same for the club’s use. Jerry Painter will inquire into materials needs and cost.
The meeting adjourned at 8:45PM.
Respectfully submitted,
Jerry Painter
Secretary
